Project Info:

As part of a Cavan-Monaghan Education and Training Board’s (CMETB) financial package to deliver additional infrastructure to schools across the region, Royal School, Cavan, now has a new standalone classroom block, offering the school more space as it expands its numbers and increases its facilities for students.

The 845 sqm block is split over two floors and situated on a formerly unused piece of land within the school’s site.

The ground floor provides two SEN classrooms, a central activities area, kitchen facilities and ancillary rooms, and on the first floor, there are a further four general classrooms.

In delivering the nearly zero-energy building (NZEB), site works included excavation of the site with retaining structures, and the creation of a sensory garden, complete with soft play surfaces.

In addition, safe access points were added with the introduction of a pedestrian crossing. The 845 sqm classroom block was manufactured offsite, with the project taking just six months from start to completion.

M & E Project Specidications:

Heating - Plumbing, ventilation and installation of a Split Air Conditioning Heating and cooling system. Room controls have been installed with ease of use in mind.

Plumbing - Boosted cold water is provided to all cold water outlets throughout the building with non-concussive taps to all wash hand basins within the toilet areas. Hot water is provided by efficient point-of-use water heaters, and accessible showers have been installed along with height adjustable sinks.

Efficient LED light fittings throughout, with programmable PIR presence detection sensors.

Call alarm system throughout the building.

Siteworks:

The new modular accommodation was sited on a previously unutilised piece of land at the rear of the existing school. This involved a large excavation, tree removal and construction of a reinforced concrete retaining structure.

The groundfloor SEN classrooms have direct access to a soft play area at the rear which is fully enclosed with specialist bow-top railings and picnic table and bench sets are provided. The existing roadway was resurfaced and fire tender turning circle added and disabled parking provided at the front of the new modular SEN building.

Pedestrian crossings were added on the existing accessway with flashing amber beacons to ensure the safety of students and teachers and mitigate any risks from increased vehicular movement towards the new building once occupied. New storm water soakaway and petrol interceptor were installed to provide drainage for the new works. Site trenching and ducting was installed to facilitate an incoming ESB cable for the new modular accommodation and IT services were linked back to the existing school building.
